History

Stellar Winery is one of South Africa's largest producer of fine organic wines, the grapes are drawn from vineyards straddling the northern boundary of the Olifant's River wine region and Namaqualand. This is an area famous for its spring flowers and is also the only semi-arid Biosphere hotspot in the world

Situated in the Namaqualand hamlet of Trawal, Stellar Winery is privately owned, with the workers having a 26% shareholding in the cellar and 50% in Stellar Agri - a table and wine grape farming operation

Vinification Details

Before de-stemming and crushing, hand picked grapes are cooled in the cold rooms of the table-grape packing facility next to the winery. The low temperature of the crushed grapes makes it possible to avoid the use of sulphur dioxide. Machine harvesting is done early morning when grapes are at their coolest. If needed the grapes are pumped through a mash chiller
